The Sangoma Dictionary: A Bridge Between Worlds
In a time when the voices of the ancestors are calling louder than ever, The Sangoma Dictionary answers with clarity, depth, and respect. This groundbreaking work is the first of its kind—a comprehensive guide that demystifies the rich, often sacred jargon of South African traditional healing. Written by the founder of Sangoma Festival, Romeo Malepe, deeply rooted in spiritual practice, this dictionary is more than a reference book; it is a bridge between worlds.
Preserving Traditional Knowledge:
Traditional healing practices have long been an integral part of South Africa's rich cultural heritage. However, the knowledge and vocabulary used in these practices have largely been passed down orally, making it vulnerable to loss as elders pass away. As Romeo explained, "The Sangoma Dictionary addresses this challenge by documenting, preserving, and making accessible the orally transmitted vocabulary used in traditional healing practices."
The Need for Documentation:
"Younger sangomas or those interested in traditional healing often face barriers to learning due to a lack of written resources," Romeo said. "The Sangoma Dictionary provides a reference that can be used as a foundation for deeper spiritual and practical learning." He further explained that by compiling a dictionary, the project helps safeguard indigenous knowledge systems, rituals, and language that might otherwise disappear.
Key Features of the Sangoma Dictionary:
- Capturing Nguni Terminology: The dictionary captures Nguni terminology that has lived mainly in spoken form and presents it in a standardized and searchable layout, making it accessible to a wider audience.
- Preserving Cultural Heritage: The dictionary preserves South African heritage and cultural traditions, capturing and formalizing knowledge systems that are both ancient and evolving.
- Fostering Cultural Integration: The dictionary fosters cultural integration and sensitivity, especially in multicultural societies like South Africa, by providing a deeper understanding of traditional healing systems.
- Explaining Contextual Usage: The dictionary explains how words function differently depending on occasion, speaker, lineage, or emotional state, promoting nuanced understanding and cultural appreciation.
The Role of Sangomas:
Romeo emphasized that "Sangomas are the custodians of oral traditional knowledge, and their systems are explained in the dictionary." He further explained that the mentoring role of sangomas is reflected in entries, highlighting their importance in preserving and passing on cultural knowledge. Sangomas undergo rigorous training, which includes divination, medicinal plants, and trance dance, to connect with their ancestors and develop their healing abilities.
