The Sangoma Dictionary: A Bridge Between Worlds
In a time when the voices of the ancestors are calling louder than ever, The Sangoma Dictionary answers with clarity, depth, and respect. This groundbreaking work is the first of its kind—a comprehensive guide that demystifies the rich, often sacred jargon of South African traditional healing. Written by the founder of Sangoma Festival, Romeo Malepe, deeply rooted in spiritual practice, this dictionary is more than a reference book; it is a bridge between worlds.
Preserving Traditional Knowledge:
Traditional healing practices have long been an integral part of South Africa's rich cultural heritage. However, the knowledge and vocabulary used in these practices have largely been passed down orally, making it vulnerable to loss as elders pass away. As Romeo explained, "The Sangoma Dictionary addresses this challenge by documenting, preserving, and making accessible the orally transmitted vocabulary used in traditional healing practices."
The Need for Documentation:
"Younger sangomas or those interested in traditional healing often face barriers to learning due to a lack of written resources," Romeo said. "The Sangoma Dictionary provides a reference that can be used as a foundation for deeper spiritual and practical learning." He further explained that by compiling a dictionary, the project helps safeguard indigenous knowledge systems, rituals, and language that might otherwise disappear.
Key Features of the Sangoma Dictionary:
- Capturing Nguni Terminology: The dictionary captures Nguni terminology that has lived mainly in spoken form and presents it in a standardized and searchable layout, making it accessible to a wider audience.
- Preserving Cultural Heritage: The dictionary preserves South African heritage and cultural traditions, capturing and formalizing knowledge systems that are both ancient and evolving.
- Fostering Cultural Integration: The dictionary fosters cultural integration and sensitivity, especially in multicultural societies like South Africa, by providing a deeper understanding of traditional healing systems.
- Explaining Contextual Usage: The dictionary explains how words function differently depending on occasion, speaker, lineage, or emotional state, promoting nuanced understanding and cultural appreciation.
The Role of Sangomas:
Romeo emphasized that "Sangomas are the custodians of oral traditional knowledge, and their systems are explained in the dictionary." He further explained that the mentoring role of sangomas is reflected in entries, highlighting their importance in preserving and passing on cultural knowledge. Sangomas undergo rigorous training, which includes divination, medicinal plants, and trance dance, to connect with their ancestors and develop their healing abilities.

Minnie Says actions have consequences and this one's no exception!
Media personality, Minnie Dlamini has refused to accept MacGyver "MacG" Mukwevho's apology for his remarks about her personal life and hygiene. MacG had sparked outrage with his comments, but later apologized on his podcast and extended an invitation to Minnie. However, Minnie stated that the apology, which was sent through attorneys, is insufficient.
In a statement, Minnie emphasized that she was defending the dignity and integrity of a fellow woman in the industry against objectifying remarks. She argued that MacG's apology, coming after public backlash, is not a genuine act of accountability. "This is not about ego - this is about systemic misogyny," she said.
Minnie stressed that the apology centers around the show's reputational damage rather than the trauma inflicted on others. She vowed to continue pursuing legal recourse, citing her responsibility as a public figure, mother, and advocate for women's dignity.
"We need systemic change. We need accountability. And we must all decide what kind of public discourse we are willing to defend - or dismantle," Minnie said, emphasizing the harm caused to her and her loved ones.

MacG's Latest Rant Sparks Debate: Is Parliament Taking This a Little Too Far?
South Africans are divided over Parliament's decision to summon podcaster MacGyver "MacG" Mukwevho over his derogatory comments about Minnie Dlamini. While some welcome accountability, others question the priorities and double standards.
The controversy began when MacG made remarks about Dlamini's personal life and hygiene, prompting Deputy Minister Mmapaseka Steve Letsike to condemn them as "repugnant" and a form of online gender-based violence. MacG will face Parliament's Portfolio Committee.
However, many wonder if this response is disproportionate, pointing to more pressing issues like rape cases and justice for victims. The recent incident of Cwecwe, a child who was raped, has sparked concerns about priorities and consistency in addressing social issues.
Adding fuel to the fire, Somandla Clothing and Nduzuzo Memela Foundation plan to lodge a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission against MacG.
As MacG faces Parliament, questions arise: Will this set a precedent for online behavior, or will it be seen as selective justice? #MacG #MinnieDlamini #OnlineBehavior #SocialJustice

Polygamist Musa Mseleku Sparks Controversy: A Closer Look
In a recent episode of _Uthando Nesthmbu_, polygamist Musa Mseleku found himself at the center of a heated debate. Mseleku, known for his unconventional lifestyle with multiple wives, made a comment about his third wife, Makhumalo, that has left many in Mzansi fuming.
According to Mseleku, Makhumalo has failed to fulfill the purpose for which she was brought into his home—supporting him. However, many viewers interpreted his words as a veiled reference to Makhumalo's struggles with fertility, sparking widespread criticism. Critics argue that Mseleku's comments are not only hurtful but also reflect a deeper issue of disrespect toward his wives, particularly in light of his recent marriage to his fifth wife.
The backlash has raised questions about polygamy, marital expectations, and the treatment of partners in non-traditional relationships. While some have defended Mseleku, others have called for greater empathy and understanding in how he addresses his wives.
As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: Musa Mseleku's comments have ignited a conversation about the complexities of polygamous relationships and the importance of respect and communication in marriage.
The Reactions Pour In
Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions to Mseleku's comments, with many expressing disappointment and frustration. Some have questioned whether Mseleku's words reflect a deeper issue in his relationships with his wives, while others have called for more sensitivity and understanding.
Mseleku's Response
In response to the backlash, Mseleku clarified that his comments were solely about the lack of support from Makhumalo, denying any reference to her fertility struggles. However, many in Mzansi remain unconvinced, pointing to long-standing concerns that Makhumalo may prioritize supporting her husband over her own needs and desires.
A Pattern of Behavior?
This isn't the first time Mseleku has faced criticism for his comments about his wives. With the addition of his fifth wife, some have accused him of showing favoritism and disrespecting his other partners. The controversy has sparked a broader discussion about the challenges and dynamics of polygamous relationships.
